Learning culture
Great peers. Brave learning. Real childhood.
We hold a high bar for our culture because who your child spends their day with matters.
Selected for character: We look for kids who are curious, kind, brave, and quietly ambitious. Kids who lift others up and celebrate their successes.
Empowered by design: Students do not just attend Lumos. They help run it. They shape their environment and own their learning, with one-on-one support always within reach.
Challenge and childhood: We believe kids are most excited when they are challenged, so we encourage risk-taking and mistakes. We also believe in protecting childhood. Playfulness and a phone-free environment are sacred.

Expeditions
Skills and knowledge only go so far.
To navigate life, kids need more. They need to face challenges, adapt when plans change, and act independently. That’s why Lumos dedicates three full weeks each year to Expeditions.
Inspired by Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound, we share his belief: There is more in us than we know. Our expeditions are designed to prove that. These are experiences that push kids in the moment but stay with them for life. They build confidence and lasting friendships.
While the nature of our trips may change from year-to-year, they generally fall into three categories:
Physical Adventure: Hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing. We get outside, get moving, and learn to understand and respect the natural world.
Service Learning: Students roll up their sleeves and work on a real-world problem they care about. It builds empathy, responsibility, and a sense of purpose.
Student-Led: The ultimate challenge in autonomy. Students plan, fund, organize, and lead the trip themselves.
The structure adapts to age. Older students take on full-week expeditions. Younger ones begin with day trips and short overnight stays. Everyone is challenged. No one is left behind.

The role of parents

Involvement on your terms
We know you’re busy. At Lumos, you’re always welcome to be involved, but never expected to be.
Clear communication
You won’t have to guess how your child is doing. We keep you in the loop with regular updates and honest feedback.
What you can expect
Block Recaps: Key highlights every 8 weeks
Deep Dives: Parent-teacher conversations and written reports
Student Showcases: Three times a year, your child shares what they’ve built, solved, and learned
Feedback that matters
We listen carefully and survey often. But we don’t govern by consensus. We make decisions based on what’s best for the community as a whole.
